Located just behind Grosse Freiheit 36 is Schmuckstrasse. At the beginning of the 20th century a small Chinatown was situated here but this was disbanded in violent clashes in the 1940s.
Located just behind Grosse Freiheit 36 is Schmuckstrasse. At the beginning of the 20th century a small Chinatown was situated here. But this is history because on 13 May 1944, the so-called "Chinese action" saw the arrest and subsequent mistreatment of around 120 Chinese men at the gestapo prison in Fuhlsbüttel. A group of them were sent without any trial or conviction to the so-called "Langer Morgen" work camp in the port area where they were forced to carry out work clearing away rubble. Yet today, Schmuckstrasse is only known as a street for transvestites. In the evenings, men stand around in this area dressed in women's clothes seeking to offer their services to the punters.
