Wasserlichtspiele Planten un Blomen

Light spectacle in Planten un Blomen

The perfect end to the day on mild summer evenings: From May to October, the famous water light concerts at the Parksee in Planten un Blomen take place every evening at 10 pm in a romantic atmosphere.

The water light organ is played live and the colourfully illuminated water fountains move in sync with the music in accordance to a specially written partition. Two artists perform the compositions: one moves the water fountains and the other plays the "light piano". The magical performance lasts half an hour and brings a long and exciting day to an atmospheric end with the water games at Planten un Blomen in Hamburg.

Harmony of light, water and music

The "light piano" has 95 white keys alone and 99 water glands spray the water into the different forms. The main beam can reach a height of up to 36 meters.

Small information on the side: the water light organ moves as much water as a city with 500,000 inhabitants consumes per hour! Already in 1938 the first water fountain was installed in Planten un Blomen - with a 50 meter high water jet and two side fountains.

This first predecessor of the water light organ was extended for the International Horticultural Exhibition in 1953 and 1963, and since the IGA in 1973 the water light organ has existed in its present form.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Sternschanze & Karoviertel

The two districts around Schanzenstraße and Schulterblatt are always in motion. Here, it is colourful and lively, and it has become much fancier in the last few years. Still, the district in the borough of Altona has preserved much of its rough, leftist-alternative nonconformism.
