Word art on Hamburg's stages.

Experience culture. Poetry Slam in Hamburg

Hamburg stands for art and culture through and through. And over the years, poetry slams have gained a firm place in Hamburg's cultural programme. Those who want to see young lyrical talents have the opportunity to do so in Hamburg almost every week. The young poet scene meets here regularly on stage to compete and inspire the audience. And with the "artistic duels", the city even has its own unofficial championship. Here, you'll find an overview of current events and the most frequent venues.

Art Ensemble of Chicago

The Art Ensemble of Chicago enjoys legendary status: founded in 1967 in the city that gave it its name, the band moved to Paris shortly afterwards. From there, it launched its global career with »Great Black Music« – a unique type of avant-garde jazz that incorporates African, but also Asian and Latin American traditions. In its sixth decade of existence, two old masters of the first generation are still with the band: saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Famoudou Don Moye.

Due to health reasons Roscoe Mitchell currently cannot travel to Europe. The line-up will now be completed by James Brandon Lewis and Aquiles Navarro.

With fantastic younger musicians added to the line-up, the collective creates its usually unusual homage to its founding members, staying true to its roots and yet always with its finger on the pulse. »From Ancient to the Future« was the band’s motto right from the start and it speaks volumes about their musical positioning – not only in contemporary jazz, but when it comes to old musical traditions and new music as well.

The album »The Sixth Decade – from Paris to Paris« was recorded in 2020 at the Parisian festival »Sons d’Hiver«, thus also paying homage to the place where it all began. The Guardian writes about the interplay between the old and new guard: » It’s heartwarming to hear the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s devoted heirs so ready to carry the story on.«

Ay! Flamenco!

iAy! Flamenco!

A musical journey through the culture and soul of Andalusia: Experience the three faces of flamenco with singer Juan Cárdenas , dancer Anna Castillo and guitarist Nikos Tsiachris : singing, dancing and guitar - ranging from tradition to modernity. An evening that lets us feel the shimmering heat of southern Spain and is characterized by passion, emotion and an energetic rhythm.

Flamenco emerged in the 15th and 16th centuries from the meeting of different cultures in the deep south of the Iberian Peninsula: the musical traditions of the Gitanos, the liturgical funeral songs of the Separds and the oriental songs of the Moors. The old Spanish songs of the Christians were added to this. The throaty Cante Jondo was born. The women danced to it, accompanied by clapping their palms, banging tables or snapping their fingers. The golden age of flamenco began in the middle of the 19th century. The guitar became its main instrument and it became one of the most popular and beloved genres. For many, it is an identity symbol not only for the region but for all of Spain and was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010.

Juan Cárdenas, Nikos Tsiachris and Anna Castillo share the art of flamenco as a common passion. An art that was established in Andalusian tablaos and that, like the three artists, you have to know and really feel to create it. It goes through your bones when it comes from the very depths of your soul. Then the demonic duende takes possession of all who surrender to flamenco.

In different combinations of dance, singing, cajon and guitar, the artists let us feel the musical heartbeat of Andalusia for an evening and share in their great passion.

Anna Castillo (dance)
Juan Cárdenas (vocals and cajon)
Nikos Tsiachris (flamenco guitar)

Barkassentour "Rund Wilhelmsburg" mit Hafenschnackerin Maike Brunk

With the barge once around the island

Discover the diversity of Europe's largest river island from the water. Harbor chatter Maike Brunk shows you idyllic nature reserves, unique tidal floodplains, all of Hamburg's Elbe bridges and, to finish, a portion of port industry. We sail along the Norderelbe and Süderelbe and circle Hamburg's smallest lighthouse at Bunthäuser Spitze.

We sail past the Elbphilharmonie and along the impressive backdrop of the HafenCity to the Elbe bridges. Here we pass the Elbe islands of Entenwerder and Kaltehofe, as well as the industrial Peute. After crossing under the A1 Elbe bridge at the level of Billwerder Island, the turnoff to the Doven Elbe opens up towards the Tatenberger lock, behind which extend the dikes of the Vier- and Marschlande. On the western side, lush green nature reserves such as Kreetsand predominate, and later in the tour, the tidal floodplain forests in Heuckenlock.

We circle around the Bunthäuser Spitze and the rural area of Moorwerder, cross under the Harburg Elbe bridges and pass the four Harburg seaports. We pass under the Kattwyk bridges and reach the Köhlbrand at the Altenwerder container terminal. After crossing under the Köhlbrand bridge, we return to the more well-known port area with container and cruise terminals, the Blohm + Voss docks and the landing stages and sail back to the starting point.

Between war and hope - Outdoor exhibition

In the exhibition ‘Between War and Hope’, Focus Agency and the St. Nikolai Memorial invite you to take an in-depth look at a complex topic that has accompanied mankind ever since: War.

Each photograph tells a story of people's experiences in extreme situations, of moments of disruption, of waiting, of hope, of reconstruction and the search for peace. Conflicts overlap, traumas endure for generations, and for many, war remains an incessant state – in which courageous forms of resistance sprout again and again. The exhibition is a multi-faceted collection that provides insights into the emotions of people caught between destruction and confidence.

Regardless of the different backgrounds of the wars, the focus is on the universal nature of the effects that war has on people. As war is omnipresent in the media, there is a need for a conscious look at perspectives beyond the usual images and narratives that enable a more comprehensive understanding of war.

This exhibition is an invitation and an appeal to approach the images, people, stories and experiences with empathy and to commemorate the past.

The exhibition is a cooperation between the St. Nikolai Memorial and the Focus Agency.
