Just in time for spring, Hamburg is transformed into a pink sea of flowers. Every year in May, the Japanese cherry blossom is solemnly welcomed to Hamburg with fantastic fireworks - a spectacle that attracts thousands to the Außenalster.
When the cherry blossoms begin to bloom on the Außenalster, a first breath of summer is in the air. The Japanese community dedicates colourful fireworks to the blossoming season.
Since 1968 the Japanese cherry blossoms have been celebrated with fireworks over the Außenalster. The colourful spectacle captivates thousands of spectators for half an hour. The sky show can be admired from the shore as well as from the water. Here you will find an overview of Hamburg's boat rentals around the Alster.
Thanks to the Japanese community
The annual fireworks display is a sign of the Japanese community's gratitude to the people of Hamburg for their hospitality. At the same time the cherry trees of Hamburg are celebrated. Since the 1960s hundreds of cherry blossom bearers have adorned the Hanseatic city.
