Four-time Grammy winner and jazz icon Terri Lyne Carrington, together with singer Christie Dashiell, has recorded a vibrant reinterpretation of Max Roach’s timeless classic »We Insist! Freedom Now Suite«. The album underscores Carrington’s lifelong commitment to jazz, to inclusion and to amplifying the voices of women, transgender and non-binary people within the genre.
Carrington has created a dynamic tribute to the compositions of Max Roach and Oscar Brown Jr. from 1960. The album »We Insist! Freedom Now Suite« was written to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States and is regarded as a defining artistic statement of the African American civil rights movement – one of the most powerful and enduring examples of music as protest.
The new arrangements breathe fresh life into the original music, combining Carrington’s distinctive drumming and electronic effects with Dashiell’s soulful vocals and an all-star ensemble featuring Matthew Stevens, Simon Moullier, Morgan Guerin and Milena Casado. The result is a dynamic interpretation that honours the revolutionary spirit of the original while conveying a message of social justice that remains profoundly relevant today.
