Synthesizers, orchestral arrangements and classical choirs – the musical journey undertaken by the former punk band Schrottgrenze is a remarkable one. »We have never made ourselves dependent on anything and have always followed our own instincts,« the band explains. To mark the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking album »Château Schrottgrenze«, the group performs the album in its entirety at the Elbphilharmonie, complemented by rare B-sides and songs from the early 2000s.
At the time, »Château Schrottgrenze« marked a turning point for the band: a move from the punk underground towards a new level of complexity and clarity. As a guitar-pop band, they created subtly melancholic songs, sparingly arranged and paired with introspective lyrics that were more abstract and mature than anything they had previously released.
The band’s most recent album, »Das Universum ist nicht binär«, brings to a close a trilogy of albums in which Schrottgrenze and frontwoman Saskia Lavaux explore themes of queerness, feminism, critical masculinity and gender roles.
