For a long time, the Arctic was a distant, abstract concept: eternal ice, polar night, expeditions, myth. Today, it is at the centre of a new geopolitical reality. Where the ice is melting, trade routes are opening up, alongside dreams of raw materials, military interests and old imperial fantasies. And suddenly, it is no longer just about the climate, but about power.
Please note: The event will be held in German.
Robert Habeck has travelled to the Arctic and is now coming to the Harbour Front Literature Festival in Hamburg with »Arctic Meltdown: The Remapping of the World«. Robert Habeck talks about this journey to the far north and, at the same time, about the future of the international order, for the Arctic is warming dramatically faster than the global average: what once seemed to be the frontier of civilisation is becoming a zone of access. Who controls the sea routes? Who owns the raw materials? Who protects the people who live there? And what remains of a rules-based world order when major powers begin to view land, sea and ice as spoils once again?
