Unfortunately, Schubert himself never had the opportunity to hear the magnificent music he composed during the last few months of his life. Widely recognised as one of his greatest works, his Mass in E-flat major was not performed until one year after his death. Thanks to Johannes Brahms, the score was rediscovered in the 1860s, since when Schubert‘s final Mass has become an established part of the international choral and orchestral repertoire. For the Collegium Vocale Gent under the baton of its founder Philippe Herreweghe, it is the perfect showpiece.
