In collaboration with Galerie Shona, the IMBA Gallery this time puts a focus on art and literature from Nigeria. Sculptures and paintings from other parts of Africa will also be on display. The exhibition opens with a reading and author discussion with the Nigerian writer Tochi Eze on 18.11.2026 at 19:30 (doors open at 19:00).
In her debut novel 'The Voices of the Night' (Pfaueninsel, 2026), the Nigerian author Tochi Eze intertwines the stories of two families over a century. From generation to generation, the traditions of the Igbo land change and become alienated, first under the trauma of British rule, then in the development of postcolonial Nigeria. The author translates spirituality into mental illness, rootedness into alienation.
What does it mean for Tochi Eze, who grew up with Igbo and English, to write in English? And how does one translate from the language of one colonial power into that of another, namely German, without losing the connection to the rhythm of that meaning-giving language that silently underlies the novel? In an author talk, Tochi Eze and Hamburg editor Agnes Krup explore these questions.
