For the eighth time, the Flügel-Fundus Foundation invites audiences to its New Year’s Concert at the Elbphilharmonie. Together with the Junge Kammerorchester Hamburg, its outstanding scholarship holders present a programme of great virtuosity, bringing together musical masterpieces from three centuries to mark the start of the new year.
Johannes Brahms’ First Piano Sonata opens the evening with youthful passion and symphonic breadth. Franz Liszt’s »Réminiscences de Don Juan« is one of the most demanding works in the piano repertoire. In this concert fantasy on Mozart’s opera »Don Giovanni«, Liszt created a work of dazzling virtuosity that places the soloist’s technical skill to the test. George Gershwin’s »Rhapsody in Blue«, performed by two pianists at one piano, brings jazz into the concert hall.
After the interval, the Junge Kammerorchester Hamburg, conducted by Justus Tennie, performs Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, an elegant work full of freshness. The evening concludes with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, in which virtuosity meets an intricate musical dialogue.
