An explosive combination: vocal acrobat Andreas Schaerer and the band Hildegard Lernt Fliegen. When Andreas Schaerer and Hildegard Lernt Fliegen take to the stage, the result is entertainment, excitement and a show of the very highest calibre. All the more so because Andreas Schaerer, winner of the 2015 ECHO Jazz Award, and his band simply cannot be pigeonholed.

The Swiss-born Schaerer is a vocal acrobat who effortlessly navigates a wide range of vocal registers and styles (from classical lieder to crooner and scat singing) with his voice. He can also produce a vast array of sounds, imitate instruments – right down to beatbox drums – and layer them in breathtaking polyphonic harmonies. Hildegard Lernt Fliegen has been thrilling audiences with their blend of jazz-rock, tarantella, circus blues, swing, opera and more – for over 20 years and now on a global stage.

In 2015, Andreas Schaerer was asked if he would like to combine a Hildegard Lernt Fliegen performance for the Lucerne Festival with a 20-minute composition for the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra. What Schaerer then delivered was a full-length 60-minute piece: »The Big Wig«, a masterpiece blending voice, jazz and contemporary music – or, to put it another way, a fusion of Schaerer, Hildegard Lernt Fliegen and the grand sound of a symphonic orchestra. In Lucerne, the performance had the audience on their feet; the press hailed it as »phenomenal«, the Neue Luzerner Zeitung wrote: »The remarkable thing was how orchestral complexity was combined here with grooves in a way that contemporary music does not usually feature.«
