The »Elbphilharmonie Visions« festival enters its third edition: every two years, the Elbphilharmonie and the NDR present ten days of outstanding contemporary orchestral works from recent decades. This biennial is intended as a »snapshot of today’s musical landscape,« as Alan Gilbert puts it. The chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra initiated the festival and, naturally, conducts the opening concert.
Six daughters, each with her own perspective, every face a small world of its own: like the caryatids – the sculpted female figures of the Erechtheion temple on the Athenian Acropolis – Veljko Nenadić’s new orchestral work »Six Caryatids« tells a multi-voiced story. With the world premiere of this commissioned work by the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung, the »Elbphilharmonie Visions« festival opens with a clear commitment to the present: large-scale, sonically powerful, ceremonial – like a musical ascent to the Acropolis.

Daníel Bjarnason’s »Inferno« then ignites: a concerto for percussion and orchestra in which the renowned percussionist Vivi Vassileva unleashes a fiery kaleidoscope, moving between marimba, gongs, Japanese taiko drums and the Basque txalaparta. Soloist and orchestra meet on equal terms – as partners in a dramatic parcours through different states of sound.
