Hardly any other work embodies the tonal brilliance of the late 18th century as perfectly as Mozart’s »Coronation Mass«. It combines radiant cries of joy and graceful solo passages to create a sound of elegance – music that is both gentle and sublime. With the sacred drama »Davide penitente«, Mozart reveals another side of his work: a passionate work of confession in which opera and sacred music merge in a fascinating way. The music originally comes from the unfinished Mass in C minor. For a Viennese benefit concert by the Tonkünstlersozietät, the composer quickly added new lyrics to the existing music and supplemented it with two bravura arias he wrote himself. Today, this reworking is considered a pragmatic and ingenious idea – typical Mozart. The Monteverdi Choir Hamburg and the lautten compagney Berlin, conducted by Antonius Adamske, will perform these two masterpieces in a matinee concert at the Elbphilharmonie – a musical celebration full of refinement and sensitivity.
