With his enchanting voice, Orpheus can tame wild animals and the roaring sea. No wonder Claudio Monteverdi chose this legendary figure as the hero of his favola in musica »L’Orfeo«. The work from 1607 is considered one of the first operas in music history. It is a masterpiece of Baroque compositional art and tells a deeply moving story: Monteverdi accompanies the desperate Orfeo to the underworld. There he wants to win back his lost wife Euridice from the shadowy ruler Plutone – an unheard-of endeavour with an uncertain outcome. The Monteverdi Choir Hamburg was instrumental in the rediscovery of »Orfeo« back in 1974 with an award-winning recording. Now, in the 70th year of its foundation, the ensemble is reinterpreting the work.
