»These are the dubious teachings of Professor Bad Trip, who is clearly fond of psychedelic and progressive rock as well as the avant-garde of the techno scene,« wrote composer Fausto Romitelli in describing the expressive musical landscapes of his triptych Professor Bad Trip. A musical intoxication perfectly suited to the theme of the Hamburg International Music Festival 2027: »Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll«.
Inspired by Henri Michaux, the Belgian writer and artist who became known for his experiments with LSD and mescaline, Romitelli composed this three-part work. The vividly coloured worlds of intoxication described by Michaux proved a perfect match for the music swirling through the imagination of the composer, who died in 2004.
Conductor Maxime Pascal is one of the foremost specialists in the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. In Paris, he leads the ambitious project of presenting Karlheinz Stockhausen’s monumental cycle »LICHT« in a complete staged performance for the first time. Joining him is his ensemble Le Balcon, with whom he has also prepared Romitelli’s psychedelic triptych »Professor Bad Trip«.
