There are apparently still people who think of choral singing as a musical form with a slightly old-fashioned charm. This impression is long outdated: the University of Bonn Jazz Choir and the Cantaloop pop choir from Hamburg impressively demonstrate just how incredibly rousing, intense and, at the same time, soulful modern a cappella singing can be. Following a celebrated joint concert on the Rhine in the summer of 2024, the two ensembles are finally set to reunite on the Elbe.
The University of Bonn Jazz Choir, which brings together around 50 students from all disciplines, has been delighting audiences since 1995 with the best of jazz, pop, gospel and rock. Under the direction of Jan-Hendrik Hermann, the Jazz Choir explores complex harmonies of up to eight parts, demonstrating that a choir can be more than just the shared joy of singing.
Cantaloop has been making music since 2009 and has been constantly exploring the possibilities of a cappella pop in new and surprising ways ever since. Christoph M. Gerl has been guiding the group of around 50 singers through the genre with stylistic confidence since its foundation. Cantaloop utilises not only the voice but also the body as the basis for rhythm and groove. This vocal encounter promises a top-class choral experience for all the senses, which is sure to include the odd goosebump-inducing moment – Vocal Company at its best!
