Invitation to participate in the free botanical excursion on three Sundays in August from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Register now!
Attention: In August, you can join me as a certified nature and landscape guide for the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve on three Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to identify plants with your smartphone in the Elbe Valley near Bleckede. Participation is free. Come along in large numbers, it's a great cause for nature conservation!
"Let's collect species data for Lower Saxony together – every plant counts." Under this motto, the Alfred Toepfer Academy for Nature Conservation is calling for mapping via app.
Our excursion area: The Elbe valley near Bleckede
During the excursion, we will use the ObsIdentify app to identify wild plants in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve.
Participants are asked to install the app from the App Store in advance and create a free account.
Important: Allow GPS tracking for photos in your mobile phone's camera settings so that the plants can be identified and their location can be accurately recorded.
What are we looking for?
This is about wild species. We photograph vascular plants. In the case of flowering plants, we also photograph the leaves, stems, and overall appearance for easier identification.
Anyone who's interested can come along. We'll head out into nature for about two hours. We'll walk along the Elbe River near Bleckede through the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve.
Please support this pilot project of the Alfred Toepfer Academy for Nature Conservation.
Participation is free! Registration is required. Please contact me at +49 5852 9587958 or info@eat-history.de. After a brief introduction, we'll spread out around the area and go on a species hunt! Come in large numbers and help us!
Afterward, you will have the opportunity to participate in a project-related survey. Please support the project by participating in the survey following the excursion.

The meeting point is not the EAT HISTORY headquarters on the Marschdeich, but the courtyard of Bleckede Castle at Schlossstraße 10 in 21354 Bleckede. From there, the walk continues into the Elbe Valley. Please register at least one day in advance by contacting Petra Pettmann MA at info@eat-history.de or by phone at +49 5852 958 7 958. Those who would like to participate spontaneously can also do so and register with me on-site.
Background: The project, funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection (MU), is part of the state of Lower Saxony's species conservation initiative. Given the ongoing extinction of species and the increasing loss of biodiversity, it is a building block to counteract the "extinction" of species experts and to reinforce the voluntary recording of species occurrences in Lower Saxony. A valid database is necessary to identify, for example, changes caused by climate change or land use, and to derive and implement appropriate countermeasures. The free apps use AI-supported image recognition to assist with plant identification and enable easy uploading of the data to the Observation International website. All vascular plants recorded there in Lower Saxony in 2025 will be available to the pilot project and later for the official nature conservation work of the state of Lower Saxony, and can be precisely located in the wild.
