OUTING PARADE
on the Norwegian 3-masted barque STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL
The Port of Hamburg is celebrating its 837th birthday.
When the port and Hanseatic city invites everyone to celebrate its popular birthday, the "birthday guests"—a diverse array of ships, most of which travel from distant lands specifically for this event—gather to celebrate. But every celebration must come to an end, and so these special guests, all the different ships, bid "Goodbye Hamburg" and depart in an impressive formation: a departure parade.
Come aboard and experience the Port of Hamburg, the colorful and cheerful hustle and bustle on land, the famous Landungsbrücken (St. Pauli Piers), and Hamburg's most famous and beautiful sights from the water! Hundreds of thousands have come, but only a few have the opportunity to participate in this impressive "parade of ships," the departure parade – on one of the most popular sailing ships.
PROCEDURE:
Boarding takes place on Sunday at the berth, the famous St. Pauli Landungsbrücken (St. Pauli Piers), in Hamburg. The captain and crew will welcome you with a welcome drink.
*The "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" sets sail and a unique experience awaits you - the departure parade - Enjoy the maritime flair on board this ship and switch off: The view of the Landungsbrücken and the Elphi from the water side is unique.
The Statsraad Lehmkuhl sails up the Elbe, past St. Pauli, and then past some of Hamburg's most beautiful districts: the Elbe suburbs of Övelgönne, the villas along the Elbchaussee to the charming Blankenese stair district, and perhaps we'll even reach Wedel – depending on the wind, current, and tide. Depending on the "Hamburg breeze," sails might even be hoisted on this beautiful ship. If you're interested (entirely voluntary, of course!), you have the opportunity and are warmly invited to join us and lend a hand to the crew.
The turnaround will begin at approximately 4:30 pm and the ship will take you back to Hamburg.
The friendly and dedicated crew is happy to answer your questions. You'll have the opportunity to view the beautiful ship: a traditional sailing vessel where sailing is still a true craft! You'll feel transported to another era. But it's not just the passing scenery during the trip on the Elbe that's breathtakingly beautiful. Coffee/tea and cake will be served on board, as well as soup and finger food.
Around 6:00 p.m., the gangway will be prepared at the famous St. Pauli Landungsbrücken (St. Pauli Piers), and the enjoyable voyage will come to an end. We bid you farewell and hope that you were able to enjoy a uniquely wonderful time on board in our beautiful Hanseatic city of Hamburg – and that we have inspired you with the passion of sailing on a tall ship.
Program: As of December 18, 2025
THE SHIP
The Statsraad Lehmkuhl was built in 1914 by Johann C. Tecklenborg AG as the training ship GROSSHERZOG FRIEDRICH AUGUST. The three-masted barque was transferred to England in 1920, sold in 1923, and commissioned under the Norwegian flag. There, she was renamed STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL. Until 1967, she served as the training ship for the Bergen School Ship Foundation. In 1967, due to technical problems, she was slated for sale. To prevent a sale abroad, the Norwegian shipowner Hilmar Reksten purchased the vessel and operated her at his own expense from 1968 to 1973. She was decommissioned in Bergen in 1973. In 1978, Reksten donated the ship to the STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL Foundation – the current owner and operator. She is Norway's largest and oldest still sailing three-masted barque. The ship is maintained through leasing to the Norwegian Naval Academy, schools, clubs and companies, as well as through public cruises.
