Gregor Gysi’s life and family history are exceptionally rich in twists and turns. In »A Currywurst with Gregor Gysi«, he and moderator Hans-Dieter Schütt take to the stage to offer an entertaining, anecdote-filled glimpse behind the scenes of political life. Or Gysi might wander off into memories of his childhood and youth.
He may recount his work as a lawyer in East Germany, shed light on his relationship with dissidents or explore the tensions between the party and its parliamentary group in the aftermath of reunification. He might also surprise the audience with an adventurous travelogue, »From Russia to Rhodesia«. And, of course, current political issues are never far from the conversation.
»A Currywurst with Gregor Gysi« follows seamlessly in the footsteps of his previous live tours, in more ways than one. For years, moderator Hans-Dieter Schütt has been Gysi’s prompt and sparring partner on stage. And more often than not, the two arrive with at least one freshly printed, substantial book in their luggage.
Now comes »A Currywurst with Gregor Gysi«, a collection of previously unpublished interviews and conversations that are, in a sense, private, recorded as the two protagonists travelled together across Germany. As the title suggests, many took place at currywurst stands from Cape Arkona to the Fichtel Mountains, from the waterfront and the Ruhr region to the Zugspitze. Gysi, a Left Party legend and an unconventional elder statesman, is in his element: quick-witted, incisive, wise and disarmingly frank. The topics range from vodka, football and East Germany to the media, sensuality and God, Germany’s first female chancellor, the Last Generation climate movement and much more. Gysi is on a journey through life – exploring how it is, how it should be and how it could be.
