For Rachmaninov’s monumental Third Piano Concerto, a work that has been calculated to contain more notes per second in the solo part than any other major piano concerto, the Italian orchestra is joined by the exceptional pianist Kirill Gerstein. As a young musician, Gerstein considered careers in both classical music and jazz. As a classical pianist, he has retained a sparkling ease and apparent spontaneity that often recalls improvisation.
With vivid orchestral colour and constantly changing musical scenes, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov transports listeners into the enchanted world of »One Thousand and One Nights«. Across four movements, his symphonic suite evokes the famous tales of Sinbad the Sailor and other legendary figures. Threaded throughout is the recurring presence of Princess Scheherazade, whose storytelling keeps the cruel Sultan from executing her, night after night.
