Thanks to his expressive voice, star baritone Konstantin Krimmel is already »at the peak of art song« (Rondo Magazine) in his mid-30s. On his latest album, »Mythos«, he delves deep into the world of ballads alongside pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz, and the result has been met with enthusiastic acclaim: »These are exceptionally intelligent, sensitive performances in which he and Bushakevitz breathe as a captivating unit.« (Grammophone Magazine)
The programme takes its starting point from the repertoire of their joint CD production featuring works by Carl Loewe and Franz Schubert, to whom Krimmel and Bushakevitz dedicate the first and second halves of their recital respectively. The culmination and highlight of the first half is Loewe’s grand ballad »Archibald Douglas«: over the course of more than ten minutes, this fascinating musical narrative unfolds, its numerous dramatic twists and turns transforming the Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie almost into an opera house.
The action is no less gripping after the interval, when eerie masterpieces such as Franz Schubert’s »Erlkönig« and »Der Zwerg« send shivers down the spine. And with his setting of »Prometheus«, Krimmel contributes his part to this season’s central theme, which is dedicated to the ancient titan.
