Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major and Modest Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition« shine in a new, colourful and multifaceted guise this evening. Beethoven’s timeless masterpiece, newly arranged by Joao Pereira, is largely carried by the voices of the wind instruments, giving the version commissioned by the Ensembel arabesque a personal, dazzling character. The focus is on the solo part played by violinist Niklas Liepe, winner of the »Opus Klassik« award and one of the most versatile and innovative artists of his generation.
Liepe and the Ensemble arabesques share not only a passion for precise, expressive music, but also a common artistic history: their collaboration on past projects has already demonstrated how Liepe’s virtuosity and creative ideas complement the ensemble’s transparent sound and brilliance. Every moment of Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition« reveals how the composer thought far beyond the sound world of the piano. Numerous arrangements testify to the enormous richness of this work, and Andreas N. Tarkmann’s colourful version for large wind ensemble complements the programme in a congenial way.

The Ensemble arabesques is now one of the most influential ensembles on the European music scene. Outstanding musicians from leading German orchestras create extraordinary programmes with precision, enthusiasm and stylistic diversity – from Baroque to modern.
