»The duo captivates with an ambitious journey through the centuries, stopping at (almost) nothing.« Anyone reading this enthusiastic review in Berlin’s Tagesspiegel of Ema Nikolovska and Sean Shibe’s programme »Orlando« can sense that the time-honoured recital format has been given a comprehensive update.
The programme was inspired by the main character of an experimental novel by Virginia Woolf. Orlando experiences an eventful life story spanning several centuries and ultimately even changes gender. It is only logical that such a multi-layered source material calls for an equally multifaceted adaptation. And so Nikolovska and Shibe made this versatility the modus operandi of an evening spanning no fewer than 11 composers and six centuries!
The programme’s trajectory ranges from the Baroque sounds of John Dowland through the Romantic sensibility of Franz Schubert to contemporary voices such as Thomas Adès, and incidentally includes music by Bob Dylan as well. To do justice to the breadth of this repertoire, Sean Shibe plays both classical and electric guitar and further expands the sound spectrum with electronic elements. You are warmly invited to join us on this journey through the centuries!
