As a regional youth orchestra, the ensemble brings together students, primarily from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, former orchestra members and talented pupils from Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium and schools across the Hamburg metropolitan region.
Bach composed several violin concertos. Around 1713, he began studying Antonio Vivaldi’s concertos more closely, which inspired him to arrange several of Vivaldi’s works as well as to compose works of his own. Like the concertos of his Italian model, Bach’s work is both musically and technically highly demanding.
Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Tenth Symphony in 1953, a few months after the death of Joseph Stalin. It followed a longer period in which the composer was only able to compose to a limited extent due to political pressure in the Soviet Union. Although Shostakovich himself never gave a definitive explanation of the work’s content, it is often closely associated with the Stalin era and its aftermath. The stark contrasts between violence, menace, grief and apparent joy are clearly audible in the music.
