The poet's almost profound work (which the Kellertheater's production, however, extracts several cheerful notes from) is considered part of world literature.
Many passages speak directly to our hearts. Who will ever forget the encounter with the fox when he says, "One can only see well with the heart; what is essential is invisible to the eye" and "You are responsible for what you have entrusted to yourself for your entire life?"
Perhaps this is the central message: trust and truthfulness. It's not surprising that the Little Prince, the Fox, and the other characters are repeatedly used as metaphors to sharpen our perceptions.
We probably only see the surface of things most of the time, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wants to direct our attention to the essentials. In any case, we are beginning to suspect that The Little Prince is not just entertaining and edifying.
