Had he lived, John Coltrane would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. The Elbphilharmonie is marking the occasion with a series of concerts dedicated to the saxophonist and his wife Alice, herself an extraordinary musician. The perfect complement is the documentary »Chasing Trane«, which brings together music, interviews, concert footage and previously unseen home videos to create a fascinating cinematic collage.
Drawing on rare and newly discovered audio and visual material, the film offers an intimate insight into John Coltrane’s intense and all-too-brief life and artistic legacy. Among those featured are former US President Bill Clinton, Kamasi Washington, Common, The Doors drummer John Densmore, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder and others.
Elbphilharmonie PLUS is a programme that opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the Elbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an experience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie PLUS programme, as do concert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and community centres.
With a ticket for one of the concerts in the »John & Alice Coltrane 100« focus, reduced-price tickets for the screening are available at the Zeise Cinema.
