The »Prophet of Fado« returns to the banks of the Elbe. Portugal’s intrepid fado singer Carminho presents her new album, celebrating a multifaceted dialogue between the female voice and her band. She is joined by a quintet that expands the music’s melancholic horizons towards jazz and rock, with a playful spirit of experimentation.

Born in Lisbon’s historic Alfama district in 1984 – the very place where the story of fado began – Carminho grew up immersed in the genre’s world. For two centuries, Portugal’s national music has embodied Atlantic longing, drawing on a network of influences that includes the wistful songs of sailors as well as Arabic and Brazilian traditions. Familiar with the world of fado from childhood through her mother’s music tavern, Carminho has done more than almost any other artist to transform the genre into a contemporary global language.

Since her debut album in 2009, she has gradually freed herself from the genre’s strict conventions, embracing new forms and instrumental combinations. »Eu vou morrer de amor ou resistir« – I Will Die of Love or Resist! It is a powerful statement that opens a new, emancipated path beyond the traditional ritual of heartbreak in fado. In this breathtaking and deeply compelling programme, traditional fados stand alongside a tender song about her son’s hair, mantra-like pieces and strikingly jazz-inflected moments.
