Book Presentation and Talk with comic artist Guy Delisle
- Readings
The Canadian comic artist Guy Delisle, internationally renowned for his original and keenly observed travel journals such as Pyongyang, Shenzhen, and Burma Chronicles, is coming to Hamburg! On Wednesday, June 19, he will present his new work "For the Fraction of a Second" (published by Reprodukt) at the Metropolis Cinema.
At the heart of the comic is the life and work of photography pioneer Eadweard Muybridge. In his characteristic accessible yet profound style, Delisle weaves together biographical facts with his humorous storytelling — portraying the story of a man who changed the world by capturing it in motion for the first time, but who also became a murderer.
Muybridge emigrated to California in the mid-19th century, where he developed a passion for the new medium of photography. With the support of railroad magnate Leland Stanford, he succeeded in creating an iconic series of motion studies — including the famous galloping horse — which had a decisive impact not only on science but also on the birth of cinema.
Following the book presentation, Guy will speak with Cale Garrido — curator, author, and active member of the Friends of the House of Photography — about the making of his work, the interplay between comics and photography, and the enduring fascination of early moving images.
