Bender + Schiewe = Brel
And across from me? Me. Jacques Brel.

“I don’t believe in heroes, I believe in people who love.” Jacques Brel never judged. He observed.

To people who love, fail, dream – to the comical and the tragic that accompany us every day.

Julian Bender (vocals) and Gerhard A. Schiewe (accordion) follow these glances, bringing Brel's characters back to life: the dreamer, the mocker, the one who understands too late.

With voice and accordion, in German and French, they open up spaces where nothing is smoothed over, but everything sounds true.

An evening of tenderness and anger, of melancholy and new beginnings – an evening about ourselves. Dedicated to one of the most important representatives of French chanson – Jacques Brel.

About Jacques Brel
His songs, mostly in French, made him one of the most important representatives of French chanson. Along with Charles Trenet and Georges Brassens, he occupies a prominent position among chansonniers who perform their own songs. Twenty years after his death, Brel's albums—especially those of Édith Piaf—remained among the best-selling French-language albums, according to Marc Robine.

The themes of his chansons cover a wide spectrum from love songs to sharp social criticism, and his performances were characterized by an expressive, dramatic delivery. Numerous other singers interpreted Brel's chansons such as "Ne me quitte pas," "Amsterdam," "Le Plat Pays," "La chanson de Jacky," and "Orly," translating them into other languages, including the international hit "Seasons in the Sun" (originally "Le Moribond").

His popularity was due in part to his simple and clear language – in comparison to Georges Brassens and Leo Ferré – as well as to the themes and ideals conveyed through his songs, in which listeners could identify.
