"Goethe’s Egmont offers all the thrills and drama you could hope for in a tragedy, including a valiant hero, a scheming nobleman, political confusion and passionate love. Beethoven appears to have been very appreciative of Goethe’s masterpiece and is said to have composed the music for it without asking for payment. Since the original performance in 1810, times have changed and nowadays, there are few opportunities to experience the music together with the stage play. However, in 2019, actor Matthias Brandt joined the Beethoven Orchester Bonn under the baton of Dirk Kaftan to create a very successful recording of the complete musical score with a shortened version of the narration. To celebrate Beethoven’s anniversary year in 2027, they are performing their musical drama at the Elbphilharmonie. A very special event for a very special year.
