Just how closely they are connected – both artistically and personally – is evident from the very first note: to mark the end of his residency in Hamburg, the renowned violinist Augustin Hadelich invites two close friends onto the stage of the Laeiszhalle: the cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker and the pianist Martin Helmchen. A couple of musician friends – and, with Hadelich, a trio who have known each other for years, are close and understand each other musically without needing to speak. In varying line-ups, they celebrate chamber music for what it truly is: conversation, adventure and a lively exchange.
The programme spans three very different sonic worlds. In Ludwig van Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A major, the piano and cello meet on equal terms – at times gripping and energetic, at times lyrically intimate, always permeated by that inner tension that makes Beethoven so distinctive. In Zoltán Kodály’s Duo for Violin and Cello, two string instruments engage in an electrifying, often highly virtuosic dialogue, in which folk-inspired elements meet expressive modernism.
The programme concludes with Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio in D minor: a work brimming with passionate drama, lyrical intimacy and dense chamber-musical interweaving – music that thrives on the precision and trust of a well-rehearsed ensemble.
