Amaro Freitas describes himself in an interview as a »percussion pianist« and he actually gets drum qualities out of the piano in his shimmering Brazilian jazz compositions. And yet so much more! Two themes are particularly closes to Freitas’ heart: the conservation of the unique nature of his homeland of Brazil and the »decolonialisation of jazz,« as he calls his musical journeys into the indigenous music cultures of Brazil and Africa.
