For percussionist and composer Alexej Gerassimez, all kinds of everyday objects are full of rhythmic potential. He sees a wealth of musical opportunity just waiting to be discovered in any material or surface. Born in the German city of Essen, he is travelling to Hamburg with three fellow percussionists to present his »Elements of Drums« programme. We are invited to experience the sounds of elements such as water, stone, wood, skin and metal as the rhythm artists take us on a musical journey from Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugues to »Águas da Amazônia« by Philip Glass. Alongside the familiar sound of marimbaphones and snare drums, we will also hear fascinating compositions for water bowls, plastic bottles and sieves. Sometimes, the percussionist‘s own body becomes an instrument. It has to be heard and seen to be believed.
