The tall brick building of the Swedish church, the 'Gustav-Adolf-Kirche', in Hamburg is located right by the Landungsbrücken. The Swedish seamen's church in Hamburg was established in 1883 as there was already a large Swedish community. In 1907 the current church building was dedicated by Archbishop J. LA. Ekman. During the Second World War, the Swedish church was one of the few buildings in the port area which was not bombed. At that time, the church became a centre for aid and refugee work.
