Hamburg's only bunker museum recalls the dark hours of Hamburg's history. During the Second World War, the bunker offered hundreds of people protection from bomb attacks.

Five metres underground, one metre thick concrete walls: for many people, the bunker was for a long time a refuge and last hope. Today, the bunker museum testifies to the horrors experienced by the inhabitants of Hamburg during the bombing raids.

The building

Construction of the bunker began in April 1940 and was completed a year later. An entrance area, a gas lock, four pipes and an emergency exit complete the building. Each tube offered space for 50 people in the event of an attack.

Memory

The underground four-tube bunker was restored to its original state with reconstructed furniture. Documents and tape recordings represent the personal experiences of contemporary witnesses during the air raids on Hamburg-Hamm in 1943, but also those of residents of the London district of Holborn on their residential area. The Bunker Museum is open every Thursday (except on public holidays). Guided tours for groups and school classes also take place on other weekdays.
