Thalia Theater

Traditional stage with impressive productions

A visit to the venerable Thalia Theater promises visitors a high-class and stylish theatre visit in the heart of Hamburg even today.

In the heart of Hamburg’s historic old town, just a few steps from the Binnenalster and Mönckebergstraße, the Thalia Theatre invites visitors to experience powerful theatrical performances. With its international outlook and diverse repertoire, it ranks among the most important spoken-word theatres in the German-speaking world.

Ambition, diversity and an international perspective

Since August 2025, the Thalia Theatre has been under the artistic direction of Sonja Anders, who brings fresh impetus to the institution – with a clear focus on contemporary storytelling, diversity and international perspectives. Between classics, world premieres and bold projects by young directors, productions are created here that are regularly showcased at international festivals – from New York to Beijing. Some performances are presented with English or Turkish surtitles, making the theatre accessible to an international audience.

Two venues – one vibrant theatre landscape

At its main venue on Alstertor, visitors can enjoy an elegant theatre atmosphere and a varied evening programme. High up in the attic, Nachtasyl opens its doors as a bar, stage and club – a space for encounters, discussion and reflection. The second venue, Thalia in der Gaußstraße in Altona, serves as a laboratory and experimental space for emerging voices and new theatrical forms. A particular highlight: the annual Körber Studio Junge Regie – a springboard for the next generation of theatre-makers.

Did you know?

The international festival “Um alles in der Welt – Lessingtage”, initiated under Joachim Lux, has become a fixture in Hamburg’s cultural calendar. Held annually from late January to early February, it brings pressing societal issues to the stage – with guest performances from around the world.

Thalia Theater also offers special experiences for families: At events like Thalia Goes Open Air, workshops, puppet theatre and face painting are part of the programme ‒ perfect for children and adults together. There are also guided backstage tours and reduced tickets for school groups, as well as specific offerings for young audiences.

A worthwhile next stop

Just around the corner: St. Petri Church, the Bucerius Kunst Forum, or a stroll along the Alster Arcades.
