The Hamburg Ballet is one of the most renowned companies in the world. Founded in 1973 by the American choreographer John Neumeier, the ensemble has earned a permanent place on the world's major stages thanks to its artistic excellence, international appeal and innovative storytelling. Since summer 2025, Lloyd Riggins has been the company's Artistic Ballet Director, focussing on the further development of the company, building on the strong heritage and legacy of the Hamburg Ballet, but with an eye to the future and outwards – to new works and collaborations that will enrich the unique dance experience that Hamburg stands for.
At the centre of the Hamburg Ballet's work is the combination of classical ballet tradition with contemporary forms of expression. With his unmistakable choreographic signature, Neumeier has created works that transform literature, music and movement into touching stories on stage - including ‘The Lady of the Camellias’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘The Nutcracker’.
The company has given over 1,000 guest performances across five continents, underlining its global impact. Performances at the Hamburg State Opera are cultural highlights for both ballet aficionados and newcomers alike.
Hamburg Ballet School
Equally significant is the Hamburg Ballet School, founded by John Neumeier in 1978 and today among Europe’s top ballet training institutions. Located in the Ballet Centre Hamburg – John Neumeier in the Hamm district, it unites the company and its aspiring dancers under one roof. Students aged 10 to 18 receive training that’s closely connected to stage experience, including participation in company performances – a unique path into the world of professional dance.
