Kiekeberg Living History Museum

History is alive with us!

The open-air museum is located in the Schwarze Berge in Kiekeberg on a 12-hectare outdoor area with more than 40 historic buildings that tell the story of the culture and way of life in the Winsener Marsch and the northern Lüneburg Heath.

Just on Hamburg’s doorstep to the south there is an unique  open-air museum: the Kiekeberg Living History Museum. Here, in more than forty historical buildings and gardens you can experience history coming alive first-hand and learn all about agricultural life in days gone by.

Authentic performers and the historic environment make a visit to the open-air museum an unforgettable experience for all the family, as even the little ones get their money’s worth, thanks to activities chosen specifically for their age. The wide variety of alternating events, courses and markets make the visit a special experience every time. In addition, the handmade speciality products and food on offer in the lovingly-furnished museum shop allow you to take a small piece of the museum home with you.

In 2023, the opening of a 1950s refugee settlement house will complete the "Königsberger Straße" to the post-war period. Also on display will be a Gasolin filling station, a QUELLE prefabricated house, the "House of History", a permanent exhibition on the development of the young Federal Republic within a settlement duplex, and a commercial building with six typical shops of this period.

Nature conservation & integration

The Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum is pursuing its goal of preserving a world worth living in for future generations with a variety of projects and cooperations. For example, together with NABU Hamburg, the museum is creating an inventory of the plant, bird and bee world on the museum grounds. Based on the mapping, concrete measures are implemented to protect biodiversity. In the social field, the museum is committed to the participation of people with disabilities. People with and without disabilities have been working together on the museum grounds for many years, and the Wennerstorf residential home for people with mental and physical disabilities was founded in 2008.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Hamburg South

Around Harburg's inland harbour, historical and modern architectural styles merge. It's maybe even a bit like HafenCity. Finkenwerder, on the other hand, has the charm of a fishing village. – Here, you see a quite different, almost rural side of Hamburg. Harburg and Finkenwerder are also good starting points for discovering the Hamburg metropolitan area.
