In spring 2026, the Stage Operettenhaus in the heart of St. Pauli will host the German premiere of ‘BACK TO THE FUTURE – The Musical’. From 22 March 2026, the stage on the Reeperbahn will become a time machine: the legendary DeLorean takes off, Marty McFly races into a breathtaking production – rock 'n' roll, heart and plenty of nostalgic enthusiasm included. Based on the cult film from 1985, the musical tells the story of teenager Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent back to 1955 by mad scientist Doc Brown in a time machine disguised as a DeLorean. Marty must bring his teenage parents together to save his own existence – and so begins a turbulent race against time.

The stage version has been a hit since its premiere in Manchester in 2020, moved to London in 2021 – and has since won several awards, including the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. 

The production is directed by Tony Award winner John Rando. The music is by Grammy and Emmy winners Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, with new lyrics and iconic hits such as "The Power of Love", "Earth Angel" and "Johnny B. Goode".

Technically, the show features spectacular effects: a life-size DeLorean flies and races across the stage at 140 km/h, accompanied by projections, lighting design and a stage set that is second to none. The creative team – including Tim Hatley, Tim Lutkin, Hugh Vanstone and Gareth Owen – ensures a multimedia experience.

Unforgettable hits from the 80s meet newly composed musical songs: in addition to classics such as "The Power of Love", "Johnny B. Goode" and "Earth Angel", the creative duo Silvestri and Ballard have written a series of new pieces that continue the story in a lively and emotional way. The well-known film soundtrack forms the foundation on which rocking, soulful and rousing numbers unfold. The result is a unique soundtrack that draws the audience into the middle of Marty's adventure – sometimes with lively rock 'n' roll, sometimes with grand ballads.

No performers have been publicly confirmed yet. Stage Entertainment began the casting process with auditions in spring 2025. Who will take on the roles of Marty McFly, Doc Brown and the other cult characters remains a secret for now.

Our tip: Special previews will take place from 15 to 21 March 2026 – a valuable opportunity to experience the musical as a guest before the official premiere. On 22 March 2026, the curtain will rise on the German premiere – with the unveiling of the ensemble and standing ovations.
