Restaurants in the Portuguese Quarter

7 Mediterranean delicacies

With Iberian flags flying everywhere, children playing in the streets and a mixture of southern European languages, the Portuguese quarter quickly takes on a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, reminiscent of holidays on the Mediterranean coast. Always cheerful and eloquent, the waiters serve the specialities of their countries, mostly grilled dishes, fish and seafood. The sumptuous, spicy meals are often accompanied by southern European wines and beers or a Hierbas, the sweet herbal liqueur from the Mediterranean. Each restaurant has its own unique character. We present seven of them here:

1.Olá Lisboa

Carlos Sequeira used to help his father deliver Portuguese food in Hamburg. His favourite restaurant was the ‘Lisboa’ on Ditmar-Koel-Straße. Thirty years later, he took it over. Since then, ‘Ola Lisboa’ has become one of the most important addresses in the Portuguese quarter. The restaurant seats around 100 guests and – at least in terms of perception – offers just as many delicacies on the menu.

Casa Franco can best be described as an ‘experiential dining experience’: there is no menu; instead, owner Franco cooks with whatever he finds at the fish market in the morning. Guests are therefore in for a surprise – but they always come away very satisfied with the choices made for them. Franco also always has something up his sleeve for vegetarians and vegans.

A Varina offers a small, carefully selected menu. However, guests agree that this is not really necessary. The chef himself provides advice on the choice of dishes in a very friendly manner.

4.Via Toselli

Not only inspired by the name of the Italian grandparents' place of residence, the cuisine also fulfils all the expectations one would have of an authentic Italian restaurant. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can see for yourself in the open show kitchen. Many vegetarian dishes also make the restaurant very appealing to vegetarians.

At Casa Madeira, guests can look forward to hearty meat and fish dishes, grilled directly on lava stone and served in extremely generous portions. In keeping with Portuguese hospitality, no one leaves the restaurant with only half a full stomach. The friendly service certainly ensures this.

At Nau, guests will find a Portuguese-global menu rather than a strictly Mediterranean one. The owners' second restaurant in the Portuguese quarter, next to Restaurante Porto, primarily reflects the colonial influence on Portuguese cuisine. A tasty change from the traditional Restaurante Porto.

The Brazilian restaurant Panthera Rodizio impresses its guests not only with its wonderful atmosphere and open grill station, but also with its serving technique: starters and main courses are brought to the table until you say ‘stop’ to the cheerful wait staff. An entertaining and, above all, very delicious experience awaits you here.
