At Azeitona you will find everything the vegetarian heart desires, from falafel and hummus, marinated vegetables and tabbouleh, to creative delicacies such as sweet-battered mozzarella or beetroot with cinnamon and nuts.

Happy veggie! When you first enter Beckstrasse, which links the districts Karoviertel and Schanzenviertel, you might get the impression that you’ve been transported to a small Dutch town – and in another century: small but quaint terraced houses with noticeably low floors flank a narrow, cobbled one-way street. Right in its midst we find the Azeitona, in English: olive. At first glance, you might underestimate this small restaurant, as it does not look particularly inviting. The furniture is rather simple and contains a certain patina.

But don’t be fooled by this first impression, because the welcome by the two chefs and the owner is all the warmer. And the varied Oriental cuisine is all the more authentic.

Here, you will find everything the vegetarian heart desires, from falafel and hummus, marinated vegetables and tabbouleh, to creative delicacies such as sweet-battered mozzarella or beetroot with cinnamon and nuts.

You can tell the quality of a restaurant in particular by the apparently simple dishes, such as falafel, - and the Azeitona scores here with excellent pita bread, crisp on the outside and containing soft chickpea balls on the inside with a delicious sesame sauce. The hummus is also prepared fresh every day – and you can taste it: the aromas of chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic and oil form the perfect combination. In addition to the food, the tea specialities and the lovingly prepared and presented lime-based lemonades are highly recommended. But if you prefer, you can also get a beer.

The format of the Azeitona definitely works – especially in summer, you will find long queues here, because all dishes can of course also be ordered to go.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Sternschanze & Karoviertel

The two districts around Schanzenstraße and Schulterblatt are always in motion. Here, it is colourful and lively, and it has become much fancier in the last few years. Still, the district in the borough of Altona has preserved much of its rough, leftist-alternative nonconformism.
