St. Marien church with its twin towers was built in 1893 by architect Arno Güldenpfennig in the Romanesque revival style and was the first new Roman Catholic church to be built in Hamburg since the Reformation. The catholic parish church is located in the heart of the St. Georg quarter and is the seat of the Auxiliary Bishop and Vicarius Episcopalis of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
