The Ecumenical Chapel in the HafenCity of Hamburg, a project by the ecumenical panel "Brücke", provides residents and visitors to the HafenCity with a location to talk with each other and to be reminded of God's presence.
It is a place of contemplation and calm in the middle of the emerging HafenCity: in the small ecumenical chapel, visitors have the opportunity to come together to talk and to be reminded of God's presence together.
With a blessing ceremony and a festive procession under the advent motto "Lift up your heads, O ye gates! and be lifted up, O ye ancient doors!" (Psalm 24) the Hamburg churches opened their ecumenical chapel - a project of the "Brücke - Ecumenical Forum of HafenCity" - in the HafenCity during Advent 2008.
The chapel was designed by the architect Stephan Schmid, himself a resident of HafenCity. The simple building with around 50 seats was built from wood and glass and the gable wall is decorated with an orange cross. The altar was made of an old ship's plank.
