Concert at PPARABEL. Center for Art in Hamburg
Thursday, November 13, 2025, 6:00 p.m.
An evening for jazz lovers:
Hamburg-based guitarist Alexander Kranich dedicates his program “Tribute to Coco Schumann” to the legacy of a German jazz legend. Together with his ensemble, he revives the compositions of guitarist and Holocaust survivor Coco Schumann (1924–2018) – performed on Schumann’s original Gibson guitar.
Coco Schumann was one of the defining figures of German jazz. As a member of the “Ghetto Swingers” in Theresienstadt, he made music that saved his life. After the war, he performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, and Louis Armstrong, and remained on stage well into old age.
The concert takes place as part of the exhibition “Into the Abyss. Terror, Violence and the Arts in Germany from 1930 to After 2000.”
The show explores how art responds to violence and remembrance – as a mirror of social fractures and as an expression of empathy. During the intermission, guests will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition.
