Javus Quartett Classical Music

Ever since Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg has been synonymous with music. The Javus Quartet is living proof that the city’s musical tradition continues to thrive: three of its members come from the city on the River Salzach. In this programme, the ensemble traces the evolution of the string quartet from the Classical period to the present day, revealing how the genre has continually reinvented itself.

Marie-Therese Schwöllinger, Alexandra Moser and Oscar Hagen have been making music together since childhood. In 2016, they joined forces with Marvin Stark from Halle to form the Javus Quartet. A decade of artistic collaboration is clearly audible in their playing: the four musicians perform with complete mutual trust and have already received numerous awards.

The programme offers a journey through the history of the string quartet, beginning, naturally, with the »father of the string quartet«, Joseph Haydn. His String Quartet in G major, Op. 77 No. 1, one of his final works in the genre, is a fitting testament to that title. Romantic quartets by Fanny Hensel and Hans Gál lead the way towards the present day. As part of the Rising Stars programme, the Javus Quartet has commissioned a new work from the up-and-coming composer and conductor Oscar Jockel, whose meteoric career mirrors that of the quartet itself.
