Hamburg Sustainability Week
- Conventions, Conferences & Meetings
June 1 to June 6, 2025
Create connections, accelerate change
The Hamburg Sustainability Week 2025, under the patronage of the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Dr. Peter Tschentscher, invites citizens and civil society actors to work together on the key issues facing our city's future.
For one week, the focus will be on sustainable ideas, projects and visions – for participation, thought and experience.
The first-ever Hamburg Sustainability Week is taking advantage of the international momentum of the high-profile Hamburg Sustainability Conference, which is taking place at the same time, to promote dialogue between science, business, politics and civil society and to provide sustainable impetus for Hamburg.
The goal is to strengthen Hamburg as a globally visible center for sustainable development. The focus is primarily on the local level: Hamburg citizens are given the opportunity to obtain comprehensive information about sustainability in their city, to get involved, and to actively shape the future of their city.
On June 4, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce will be transformed into a sustainability workshop: In twelve workshops, panel talks, and keynote speeches, participants will work together on concrete solutions to conflicting goals of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
But that's not the only place where design, discussion and inspiration take place: more than 80 public events will take place throughout the week in all corners of Hamburg - organized by around 65 committed organizations from the city.
A special place for exchange is St. Katharinen Church in HafenCity. Here, the impressive installation "GAIA" by British artist Luke Jerram floats – a monumental globe that invites reflection on our planet. Beneath it, the "Planetary Talks" and "Planetary Sounds" formats unfold daily, in which personalities such as former German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, climate researcher Mojib Latif, book prize winner Kristine Bilkau, polar explorer Dirk Notz, and pianist Hanni Lian combine discourse and art – with a shared focus on climate justice.
Under the motto "FUTURE finds its way into the city," Hadley's in the Grindelviertel invites you to intimate salon discussions with exciting guests such as Harald Welzer. The Abaton cinema will show a curated film series by Felix Grassmann and director Lars Jessen, accompanied by high-profile guests such as actor Peter Lohmeyer.
The University of Hamburg is also participating with lectures and workshops on the topic of sustainable urban development. And the non-profit cultural and educational initiative TONALi will be bringing the music hall to life.
Most of the events during Hamburg Sustainability Week are free to attend. However, registration is required for some program items. A complete overview of all events, as well as further information on participation and registration, can be found in our event calendar.
The Hamburg Sustainability Week is supported by the Hamburg Authority for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA), the Hanns R. Neumann Foundation, the Joachim Herz Foundation and the Hans Weisser Foundation.
