Port des Lumières

Centre for immersive art

Port des Lumières, the first permanent exhibition centre for immersive art in Hamburg, offers its guests a breathtaking and unique art experience in the heart of HafenCity.

The very special exhibition experience

Immersive art has enjoyed great popularity for several years now. This digital art form immerses visitors in the art and history of the artists; it stimulates all the senses, creating a unique art experience that goes beyond simply looking at a painting. Port des Lumières is Hamburg's new place for spectacular immersive experiences of light, sound and movement. In the heart of HafenCity - in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier - a digital journey begins that appeals to all the senses. A fascinating world unfolds across 1,700 square metres of space and ten-metre-high walls, in which images come to life and music permeates the room.

Changing productions are shown - currently with highlights such as the opulent Klimt show, the colourful Hundertwasser world and the visual journey ‘Journey’. The special exhibition ‘Cosmos: The immersive journey into space’ will start on 3 July 2025. Guests can expect state-of-the-art projection technology, impressive sounds and special architecture for an immersive experience for all the senses. Whether pulsating colours, iconic motifs or a journey through time and space - this is not about classic viewing, but about emotion, amazement and immersion.

An immersive journey into the wonders of the oceans

“Wonders of the Ocean” at Port des Lumières takes you on a spectacular journey through the fascinating depths of the world’s oceans. Amid shimmering coral reefs, glowing jellyfish, and majestic whales, an immersive experience of light, sound, and movement unfolds, bringing the hidden beauty of the underwater world vividly to life. From the surface of the roaring ocean down to the mysterious deep sea, visitors encounter fascinating creatures of impressive size and experience the magic of bioluminescent life forms up close. Authentic ocean sounds and iconic film scores transform the exhibition into an audiovisual experience that raises awareness of both the beauty and the need to protect our oceans.

Between Gold, Color, and Worlds of Light

The summer special at the Port des Lumières brings together three immersive exhibitions into one impressive art experience. “Klimt” transports visitors into the glamorous world of Viennese Modernism and showcases the iconic works of the “Golden Period,” brimming with ornamentation, elegance, and emotion. The program is complemented by the vivid, organic visual worlds of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, whose art and architecture blend nature, humanity, and imagination. With “Journey” by the Turkish collective Nohlab, the experience expands to include an audiovisual journey through light, perception, and digital art. Moving projections, music, and monumental visual worlds create an immersive experience that bridges classical art and modern technology.

A Stroll Through Monet’s World of Color

“Monet: Master of Impressionism” at the Port des Lumières invites visitors on an immersive journey through the fascinating world of Claude Monet. Over 200 of his world-renowned works, including “Impression, Sunrise” and the famous Water Lilies series, come to life through monumental projections, spatial sound, and a captivating soundtrack. Play of light on the water, colorful landscapes, and iconic motifs allow visitors to immerse themselves deeply in Monet’s art and the world of Impressionism. The immersive presentation combines the timeless beauty of his works with modern technology, creating an audiovisual experience in which art is not merely viewed but directly experienced. The exhibition is complemented by a short showcase of the artist Félix Vallotton.

Art for everyone

Visitors of all ages can wander freely through the space, let themselves be enveloped by the paintings or experience new perspectives from the viewing platform in the shape of a ship's bow. The Kids' Atelier invites the youngest guests to join in.

Whether tourist or Hamburg resident, technology fan, art lover or adventure seeker - the Port des Lumières is the perfect tip for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in another world.
