In Hamburg’s district Rissen, the Elbe River meets a special part of the beach that is a popular destination for leisure and nature. The Wittenberger beach is an idyllic place that guarantees a relaxed break at every visit. 

A Hamburg, very different from what you know it to be

Especially on weekends, the sand is filled with peace seeking families, couples and groups that spend their whole day in reach of the water. How could you blame anyone for that? Here at this popular spot in Wittenbergen, Hamburg once more shows another side of itself. But the wonderful view on the Elbe has a strong competitor, one that seems too beautiful to be true. The lighthouse Wittenbergen can almost be called a cliché in this surrounding. 

Since 1900 it forms the leading lights Wittenbergen -Tinsdal, together with the lighthouse of Tinsdal, for boats driving down the Elbe in Rissen. It’s simply a nautical feast for the eyes. 

Nature reserve Wittenbergen

At the rear area of the beach, you can find a perfect place to take a nap in the shadow of the trees. The terminal that unfortunately is closed for ferries offers even more spots for sunbathing and the beach also offers many options for fun activities. The beach is part of the 67 hectare big nature reserve Wittenbergen that consists of the highest Elbe slope in Hamburg, an inland dune, heathland and Elbe grasslands.
