Shipwrecked people, who were not identified, rest at the Friedhof der Namenlosen (cemetery of the nameless)
Almost every island in the North Sea, and even some places on the mainland, have a cemetery like this. An order was apparently given on Neuwerk due to the number of shipwrecks and washed-up corpses: There always had to be a coffin available. This cemetery was built because it was often very difficult to transfer the dead seamen to the mainland, particularly in the winter.
