Kemal-Altun-Platz

The young, politically active student Kemal Altun took his own life in 1983 during the extradition trial against him. He had fled from the military junta in Turkey and sought asylum in Germany.

The death of the young man mobilised many people in the 1980s to protest against the asylum policy of the German government; they met on the former wasteland in Ottensen. For the residents, this place has since been known as Kemal Altun Platz. But much has changed: it is now a neighbourhood park. Even if the name is not official, the district administration has now installed road signs.
